Today we're going to doing a bit more practise on summarising sections of a text and identifying particular stances. We're going to be doing this with a focus on a genre of text known as popular science. In terms of topic we're going to revisit the nature/nurture discussion that we started looking at a few weeks ago relating to gender. This time, we're looking at whether hard work and practice or sheer natural talent is the determining factor in being 'good' at things like music and athletics.
What examples of popular science texts from your field of interest/study did you find (see page 5 of the preparation materials)?
Which of the activities did you rate as being more connected to talent, and which are more about hard work?
Share your summaries and your paraphrases from the after reading tasks. What information did you include?
How useful do you think pop science texts would be for researching a particular topic?
Think back to our text author/type/purpose questions from the critical response section of the reading exam. How do pop science texts compare to academic journal articles?
Did you find the 10,000 hours argument convincing?
How likely is it that the rule applies to anything you're trying to learn?
What other factors might affect your progress in mastering a particular sport, language or musical instrument?
How well does Gladwell support his arguments?
