This is our last session that focusses on listening skills, so in addition to our student-led listening activity, we'll have a final practice of working with a simple spoken presentation, looking at some of the vocabulary and trying to come up with our own summary. Before you watch, think about the following questions:
Where do you go when you really need to get work done?
Do you have any experience of working in open plan areas?
What is your most common distraction?
If you were a manager of a large company, would you make sure everyone was in the office together during the day, or would you let them work from wherever they liked?
What would be the pros and cons of both of these approaches?
In which of the places shown above would you be most productive?
Share your notes from the listening task on page 3:
The speaker asked people the question “where do you go when you need to get something done?” Typically, what 3 different answers do they give?
Do people get much work done at the office? Why, or why not?
Write two examples the speaker gives of distractions at home. What name does he give to this type of distraction?
What do managers and bosses think the main distractions at work are? Name three of them.
Does the lecturer agree with the managers and bosses?
What does the speaker think are the two main problems at work? Give two reasons that the speaker gives for each problem.
What three suggestions does the speaker make?
What feedback did you get from Eduflow on your summary? What points did you include?
Which of the speaker's three suggestions do you think would be most effective?
What do you think the future workplace will look like?
Do you have any examples of phase-based work?
How easy do you find it to get deep, meaningful work done?
How easily distracted are you?
