Next week there will be formative exams for you to put into practice everything we've been working on in these classes. You will be presented with two texts: for the first one you will be required to write a short summary (max 150 words) and for the second text you will write a critical response (max 200 words).
We're going to practice general comprehension and summary writing this week with a text from the journal Science which continues to explore the reasons for the under-representation or women in the STEM fields. Last week we looked at research which highlighted some of the innate difference between men and women, and how the genders often gravitate towards different subjects. This week we'll look at studies which go after a different reason: unconscious bias.
What points would you include in a summary of the article? Share your notes from page 4 of the preparation materials.
Below are the kinds of questions that comprise the Critical Response section of the assessment. Discuss how you would answer each one in relation to the Science article.
What is the main message of the article?
What type of article is it?
What is the purpose of the article? Has the article succeeded in its purpose?
How strong is the author’s evidence that they use to support their argument?
What are the strengths and weaknesses of the article?
What is your stance on the topic? Use the article’s content and evidence to explain.
How does the article differ in its arguments from the one we read last week?
Has the article changed your mind about the reasons for the under-representation of women in STEM?
If the problem of unconscious bias could be solved, would we see more of a 50/50 split of men and women within disciplines?
