How much food do you throw away every day?
How much of a problem is food waste in your country? Is it something people care about generally?
Apart from wasting money, what other global implications are there for wasting food?
Read through the text and then work through the activities and think about the discussion questions.
What synonyms did you come up with for the editorial language on page 4?
The text was written in 2014. How relevant are the points raised to the present day?
Towards the end of the text, some environmental impacts are discussed:
The amount of land needed to grow all the food wasted in the world each year would be the size of Mexico. The water used to irrigate wasted crops would be enough for the daily needs of nine million people, and wasted production contributes 10% to the greenhouse gas emissions of developed countries.
Who do you think has the biggest responsibility to help mitigate these problems: individuals, farmers, supermarkets or governments?
Read through the text below and then work through the activities and think about the discussion questions.
On page two of the preparation materials, what were the three factors that you identified as having contributed to increases in food prices?
Share the summary sentence that you wrote with the group.
What are the connections between this and the first text we looked at?
What points do they both make?
What problems do they highlight?
This week we will begin looking at what makes language sound 'academic'. In preparation, please work through the K+ activities on formal and informal registers. You will need to log in with your Kaplan ID, so please speak to your teacher or send me an email (phil.martin@york.ac.uk) if you have not yet received this.
