In this final reading class we're going to go through a basic sequence of reading, comprehension checking, summarising and then critically responding to the text. Last week's reading class covered paragraph matching and identifying stance, which is something we'll practise again this week. The text you're about to read offers some criticisms and replies to the Outliers excerpt that we looked at last week, and asks you to formulate your own stance on the topic.
As a refresher, what do you remember about the Gladwell text from last week? What kind of text was it, what were its key arguments and how were they supported?
Share your notes that you made in response to the questions on page 3 of the preparation materials.
What is Dan McLaughlin’s goal?
What concerns does Anders Ericsson raise about Malcolm Gladwell’s claims?
Does David Epstein believe that Dan McLaughlin is likely to succeed with his plan? Explain why/why not.
Why is Dan McLaughlin’s plan useful to researchers?
We've now read an excerpt from Gladwell's Outliers and a response from Carter. How do these two texts differ in terms of their genre, purpose and intended audience?
How reliable are the two sources?
Can you summarise each text in a single sentence?
What is your stance on the topic of whether talent or practice plays a larger role in success?
The two texts are now fairly old: Outliers was written in 2010 and the Carter article was 2014. Can you find out what happened to Dan McLaughlin? Did he achieve his goal?
If you enter talent and practice into a standard search engine, what articles come up? Which ones could be reliable sources?
