In week eight of last term we discussed the post-pandemic future of presentations. Review the presentation format that was introduced, and develop any ideas you have for possible presentation topics and seminar discussions. In today's class we're going to be discussing the role the Power Point and similar apps play in audience engagement. Watch the YouTube clip via the link below and make notes for today's live session.
How much of your message is lost through badly designed slides?
How limited is our working memory? Do you have any similar stories to David's observation about people with train tickets?
The slides on the right were created by a pre-sessional student going on to study a business degree.
Do they give you a good idea of the topic and structure of her presentation?
Do they conform to the advice that David Phillips gave?
Could they be improved in any way?
What do you as a group feel is the best way of presenting online and in-person? How effective are Power Point slides in conveying information in an engaging way?
How do traditional presentations fit into Matt Mullenweg's vision of the asynchronous, distributed workplace that we looked at last term?
However we feel about the questions above, slides-based presentations are likely to feature in our academic and professional careers even in a post-pandemic world. Therefore, we'll still be practising presenting information in as engaging and interactive a way as possible, using the brief we looked at in week 8.
Share your ideas so far for presentation topics. Think about what you will present versus what you will discuss as a group. What kind of information will go on your slides?
