Introduction to the department

You are now a member of the Department of Biology. The department is made up of academic staff involved in teaching and research, support staff and students on taught degrees or research degrees.

Academic staff - may have the title Professor, Reader or Lecturer. They are leaders in their fields and engaged in teaching and research. Most will supervise research students and some also hold certain key administrative roles within the Department.

Research staff - members of staff employed to conduct research projects within their field of expertise. They may not be involved in teaching or supervision, instead concentrating on their research projects.

Support staff – making the department run smoothly. They communicate important information, provide technical assistance and help signpost you to other services and support you might need within the University.

Taught Students – We have a vibrant student body with close to 1000 undergraduates studying for degrees in Biology, Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences alongside related specialist degree subjects. We also cater for integrated Masters and postgraduate taught Masters degrees. You may interact with these students through demonstrating, or when they are undertaking research projects within your research group/lab.

Research Students - We have a large Graduate School of PhD and Masters by Research students. You are actively engaged in your own research projects, and developing your own skills and experience. You are integral to the research work, and thus the success and reputation of the department.

During your time in the department you will likely interact with all of these different staff in different contexts.
