First Formal Review of Progress

Progression Criteria and Student Evidence for Progression into Year 2 of a full-time PhD programme (or equivalent stage of a part-time PhD programme)

Criteria

A student must demonstrate that they:

a) can describe the direction their research is taking and the research questions it addresses

b) have planned in a realistic fashion the second year (or equivalent) of their research, indicating any risks and how these will be mitigated

c) have sufficient acquaintance with the relevant field of knowledge to place their research into context

d) have sufficient proficiency in the relevant research methods, techniques and theoretical approaches to move their research to the next stage

e) have undertaken all required training

f) Have considered ethical issues (including data management) where applicable.

Evidence

  1. A poster produced for the Annual Graduate Symposium in May
  2. A maximum 3,000 word report submitted by deadline 3 weeks before the four week window
  3. Adequate SkillsForge record which includes all mandatory training and a sufficient range of ‘expected’ training

Your poster, your report and performance at the formal review meeting allow you to demonstrate you have met criteria (a), (b), (c), (d) and (f).

Your SkillsForge record allows you to demonstrate you have met criteria (e) and (f).

Timing

In Biology, the first formal review of progress takes places in four week window which is at 9 months (weeks 36-39 inclusive).

Any second attempt at progressions occurs by 12 months.
