Benefits and Uses of a Geography A Level:
Students with AS or A Level Geography have access to a wide range of possible careers and higher education courses. The course develops a vast number of important skills that are transferable into higher education and employment. These include collecting, analysing and interpreting data, communicating your findings in different ways, identifying and developing links between different parts of the subject. These skills are in great demand and are recognised by universities and employers as being of great value. Geography combines well with all other AS and A level subjects.
Taken with sciences, it will support applications to traditional science-based courses like engineering, psychology, environmental sciences, oceanography and geology.
Taken with humanities, Geography will support an equally wide range of university courses such as Business Studies, Law, Media, Politics and Philosophy. Perhaps uniquely among the AS and A level subjects Geography includes and integrates the arts, sciences and social sciences, providing a correspondingly broad base of knowledge, understanding and skills.
Aims of the Course:
“Geography takes you places” and is at the heart of many global issues from climate change to sustainable development. Students learn about the processes that shape the world and the significance of people within this global system. It does far more than simply analyse the places under study, placing them in a broad social, environmental and economic context. Geography A Level is characterised by breadth and relevance to the modern world, drawing on knowledge and skills from arts and science based subjects. Field work is an essential part of this course and there will be compulsory local fieldtrips as well as optional fieldwork further afield.
