BTEC National Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science is an equivalent qualification to a traditional A Level subject. It can also be studied as a general science qualification at Level 3 for pupils who have studied Science at GCSE.
Unit 1 – Principles and Applications of Science I (90 GLH)– An externally examined unit which consists of three sections: Periodicity and properties of elements; Structure and function of cells and tissues; and Waves in communication. Each section is examined as a separate paper of 40 minutes in duration. These sections correspond to the traditional Biology, Chemistry and Physics and the sum of the marks achieved on each paper is used to determine the grade for the unit.
Unit 2 – Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques (90 GLH) – An internally assessed coursework unit that is moderated by the examination board. A series of four assignments must be completed, each focussing on a different area of practical work in science.
