Purpose:
To experiment with a variety of watercolor techniques;
To make connections between experimenting with watercolor techniques and learning to create your own landscape watercolor.
Some of the concepts and/or things that I want to consider/keep in mind as I look towards creating a final watercolor landscape are layering, being patient, and being aware of white spaces early on. For example, in my landscape watercolor, you can clearly see that I went so dark compared to the rest of my practices, which I am quite proud of. I am not proud of my landscape, for a couple of reasons. I did many layers, but I was not patient and I used too much pigment. I also think I did a good job with keeping the white space meaningful and open in my surrounding practice watercolor paintings, but then when it came to the landscape painting, there is barely any white space, and the whole thing looked very two-dimensional. You cannot really visualize the separation of the foreground, the middle ground, and the background. In my final landscape painting, I want to be more patient. I will be able to do this by having at least two different paintings going on so that I can relax and take my time. I will layer a lot, and use washes in order to make the sky and as a start for all of the parts of the painting. I will also refer back to my practice paintings with practice techniques so that I know how to make certain objects. Overall, I am excited to work on layering and work on really being patient with this piece so that I can be happy with it in the end, using all of the concepts that I want to work on.
