Purpose:
To determine where values change when light moves over an uneven surface by using a range of values to paint the different values in a realistic, monochromatic self-portrait;
To effectively communicate an image that looks like you through careful examination of the values and structure of your face.
To paint a self portrait value painting, you need many skills and/or factors. For instance, you need to be able to create value in your painting by using tints and shades. You need to be able to make tints by adding white to black, and shades by adding black to white. This is essential to creating a painting that looks realistic and 3D because, without it, you would not be able to tell the difference between the neck and face if they are all painted white or black. Another key factor/skill you need is for the value self portrait is being able to see the light from dark and creating implied lines. These are when you make different shades and put them against each other so your brain sees a line, and/or connects lines without you actually drawing lines. These are important because the painting would not look realistic if there were lines outlining every part of the face.Â
