Part One:
To promote positive role models in the lives of students
To empower students to stand up for what they believe is right
To create a personal work of art based on students’ interpretation of an Unsung Heros’ character and actions;
To reflect on your experiences by writing an impact paper that articulates your personal journey and interprets their work for the viewer.
My unsung hero that I chose is named Jacob Valentine II. He served in WWII and when he came back home, he decided to go into biology. He got a degree in zoology, and became a regional life biologist. He moved to the gulf coast where he lived for almost 40 years after that. He began to study sandhill cranes because of their striking appearance and their reputation as the "rarest bird in North America". There were only 35 at the time he started to study them, because of hunting and habitat loss. He then saved the cranes and then strengthened the Endangered Species Act. I feel a connection to Jacob because when I love animals and I care about them. When I used to live in Nebraska, we would see the thousands of cranes flying over us once a year. That was really special, and really cool, and I without Valentine, I would not be able to have seen them. I am really excited to learn more about Jacob Valentine II!
