"5 x 7"
A graphite drawing based off of the work of Ansel Adams, "Mount Brewer and Bullfrog Lake, Kings Canyon National Park, California, c. 1925"
How would you describe the quality of the lines, [or shapes, values, etc.] used in your work? Were the lines made quickly or slowly? Are they straight or curvy? Explain why you drew this way.
I would describe the quality of my drawing between high and medium. I think that when looked at from afar, which I believe is what you are supposed to do with this, it looks like a high-quality drawing. When looked at up close, though, it looks mid because of the outlines on some of the plants and some random pencil marks. I would say that the values are pretty high quality because it is darker in the foreground and lighter in the background. Most of my lines were made fairly quickly, but not like whisking in watercolor. More intentionally shaped, but pretty quick. A few of my lines are curvy, but mostly they are straight. For example, the trees and mountains all have pretty straight lines, but the rocks and hills are pretty curvy. I drew this way because this was how I felt I was able to interpret the photo without being crazy over the detail but still adding detail. This was my medium in between. I was able to add value, but I wasn't doing shadows on the tiniest pebbles.
I am fairly happy with my drawing, but seeing it from this light (in the photograph) makes me want to improve some things. For example, while I like the shapes, there are some that I would change that look a little bit sloppy and unrealistic. For example, the tree in the front, where you can basically see its outline. That looks messy. Another thing is the hill closest to the front in the foreground of the image. It looks like it just has scribbles on it, and not enough texture compared to the rest of the drawing. I think that the mountains also do not have enough texture and have too much shading. Things I like, though are the foreground and the water because those look the most realistic with the textures and the contrast to me.
