Purpose:
To demonstrate understanding of the structure for each of YOUR features: eyes, nose, & mouth;
To practice using black & white charcoal to render a drawing, using brown paper as the middle value
Some things that I am going to need to remember, improve, or work on, for the final self-portrait are my technique, my accuracy, and my values. In order for the final self-portrait to look like me, I am going to need to focus on these things. For example, my technique caused my lips to look misshapen because of the lines. I also ended up blending a lot of the white with the charcoal on all three of my drawings. I wanted to make the white look sharp, but it didn't end up looking that way. I was told to not blend the white with the charcoal because of the grey- affect because the brown paper was supposed to be the medium, and I just ended up showing almost no brown. This made it seem less realistic and detailed. Another aspect that I will take note on when I start my final is my accuracy. For example, I ended up have to erase a lot of my eye because the shape was totally wrong, because of the angle. While this will be easier to avoid while looking at a photo, I can still take preventative measures such as checking shapes before I add detail to them, and looking at the photo straight on instead of at an angle. Lastly, I need to work on my values. I ended up blending some white and charcoal, which as stated earlier, was not advised. I need to be able to use the paper as my medium, and I will definitely take that into account when I work on my final self-portrait, in order to get the right amount of detail to make it look like me. Overall, there is much to learn and work on before and during the process of my final self-portrait, and I am excited to begin!
