Project Purpose:
To understand how a line can be used to create a three-dimensional form
To create a sculpture that considers balance and repetition, variety and emphasis
To consider where artists find their inspiration
I see variety in my reeds. There are many loops, all of different shapes and sizes, except for the emphasis. My emphasis is in the center, where there are the heart looking loops made out of reeds with the paper in it. The variety is seen when I bend some of the reeds, making them twisted, but also leaving some flat. There is variety in the width and the length of it. This is not a very wide sculpture; it doesn’t go very far out. But, it is a pretty tall sculpture. There are some large loops, like the one crossing in front of the emphasis, and also there are small ones, for instance underneath the emphasis. There is also variety in the media used, which is not just reeds and glue, but also paper. The large loop that looks like an oval underneath is unusual compared to the others, which are closer together and not as large. What I am trying to get to is that there is a lot of variety in this sculpture. There is also a very clear emphasis, which is easy to see and meaningful. (Like a heart behind a barrier trying to get out, and when you look on the other side, it looks like it is out.)
Before going into this unit, I have to admit that I did not know very much about sculpture. I thought they were large things made out of clay or metal or something. During this unit, I found out they were so much more, and everyone has meaning behind it. Like Stephen White’s, which are inspired by the Chinese lanterns that are still here today and have been for hundreds of years. I learned that they are not always one person doing it, like with Martin Puryear’s work. There were a lot of people helping to make that sculpture happen. I learned that that was actually a sculpture when I would have always considered it a statue of some sort. I also found out that sculptures could hang. That one was kind of embarrassing for me not to have known it, but it is true that before this unit I did not know that something hanging could be a sculpture. I just would think of it as a light. I didn’t know that a sculpture could be an amazing, intricate work with paper and ink that looked like something threw it onto a wall as Mia Pearlman did. I was amazed at some of these artist’s work and learned so much throughout this unit.
