3.5' x 2.5', Acrylic Paint and Cardstock on Paper
The whole process of creating this nest was a very interesting one. I chose the paper because I really liked the idea of a dark background, and I wanted to use a paint that would highly contrast it. I chose orange acrylic paint because I have been loving the color orange lately and wanted it to pop against the blue background. Also, because brown is basically a dark shade of orange, I thought that it would work well for a nest that was primarily brown. I picked the bright green because instead of using white, I wanted to use a color that would really show off the lighter values, and I picked the brown fabric to act as a shadow. I liked all of these ideas in my head, but unfortunately the orange faded and became more transparent as it dried, making the color contrast less striking, and more messy-looking. Practicing creating the nest definitely did make it easier to get the shape down quicker, and made the process of painting pretty seamless. I was just not prepared for the color change against the clue background. The mediums I chose I really liked, and I think work together in a really cool way, but they were probably not the best materials to use in this case with the dark paper. I could have used a lighter paper, that would still show contrast, but also be able to capture some lighter values of orange without them fading into the ultra-dark background. Overall, this was a great exercise to kind of remind me of color theory again and how different mediums work together, and I had a lot of fun with it!
Three of my other trials with a stick and ink:
This work is by Laura McRae Hitchcock, who was in a challenge to create 30 paintings in 30 days. This was her third day. I liked this painting of nests because of the orange and blue values. The orange was what I was going for, and these paintings made me realize that to seem more realistic, I just needed to add some red values and even pink, which would have made it a lot better/easier to visualize. Overall, this color palette is nice to me and a nice representation of what my goals could be if I were to ever do this again.
