Learning a language will significantly expand students' horizons about the personal, social, cultural and employment opportunities that our increasingly interconnected and globalised world will make available to them in the near future. Students will also acquire communication skills that will enable them to interact in French or Spanish and develop a deep understanding and appreciation of the relationship between language, culture and learning.

French A
French A is an elective course. Students consolidate and expand on the linguistic and cultural knowledge acquired in Year 8. Students will be enabled to communicate effectively in pre-intermediate oral and written French through a range of listening, speaking, reading and writing tasks. With a focus on such topics as family, friends, school life, shopping, leisure, pastimes, sport, eating and drinking, students will increase their communication skills as well as their knowledge of French and the francophone world.

Suitability: Students who are interested in expanding their knowledge of French culture or those considering studying French in Stage 6.

What Students Learn:
Students will learn vocabulary, expressions, pronuntiation and intonation, grammatical structures and socio-cultural aspects related to the topics: family, friends, school life, shopping, leisure, pastimes, sport, eating and drinking.
Cultural components include:
famous francophone people, French names, French words used in English
the French-speaking world
school life, family life, cities and famous buildings in the francophone world
French cuisine, menus, recipes, restaurants, cafes and school canteens; French money
leisure activites in the francophone world, daily routines, sporting events
places to visit in Paris
Assessment:
Students will complete the following assessment tasks throughout the year:
Email to French exchange student (25%)
House for sale Ad (25%)
Research task and poster (25%)
Final exam (writing, speaking and comprehension skills) (25%)
Future Pathways:
French A will assist in the study of French B and Stage 6 French continuers.
Studying French will equip students with sufficient oral and written skills to work in the careers of: Education, Tourism, Media, Commerce, Government or International Relations.

French B
French B is an elective course available to students in Year 10. Students consolidate and expand on the linguistic knowledge, cultural knowledge, and skills acquired in French A. Students will be enabled to communicate effectively in intermediate oral and written French through a range of listening, speaking, reading and writing tasks. With a focus on such topics as shopping, fashion and clothing, leisure and pastimes, travelling, holidays and celebrations, past events, future plans, eating and drinking, health, social media, and the environment, students will increase their communication skills as well as their knowledge of French and the francophone world.

Spanish - Introduction
Spanish - Introduction is an elective course that provides a practical introduction to the Spanish language. Based on a communicative and culture-based approach, this course is designed to develop basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the Spanish language. The student acquires the language largely through simulated real-life situations in the classroom as well as through grammar content. Throughout the year, cultural aspects of the Hispanic world are also introduced. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required.
