Hispanic Heritage Month was established as a way to honor previously overlooked Latinx contributions and highlight new ones, going forward.
President George Bush said in 1989, “Today, Hispanic Americans are leaders in government, business, education, sports, science, and the arts… Not all of the contributions made by Hispanic Americans to our society are so visible or so widely celebrated, however. Hispanic Americans have enriched our nation beyond measure with the quiet strength of closely knit families and proud communities.”
Today we begin MANÍA MUSICAL / MUSICAL MADNESS to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!!! Soon, you will hear 2 songs over the announcements. Using the Google Form in your email, vote which song is your FAVORITE - you may only pick one!
Remember, you don’t have to know the words to a song to enjoy the music, the beat, and most importantly its culture and where it came from.

Hispanic Heritage Month (El mes de herencia hispana) takes place September 15 to October 15 every year as a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the American Latino community.
You might be wondering why it starts in the middle of September:
September 15 was chosen as the kickoff because it coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of five “Central American neighbors,” as President Lyndon B. Johnson called them—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Those five nations declared their independence from Spain on September 15, 1821.
Other Spanish-speaking nations have anniversaries close to those dates as well. Mexico– our neighbor– declared independence from Spain on September 16th, 1810. Chile did the same on September 18th, 1810.
Starting on Monday, to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month / El mes de herencia hispana, we are doing a MANIA MUSICAL (or in English, Musical Madness)!
Each morning, you will hear 2 songs during advisory. Using the Google Form that you will receive in your email each day, you will vote which song is your favorite. The votes will be tallied up and the winning song will move ahead in the MANIA MUSICAL / Musical Madness competition. All of the results will be visible in the upstairs showcase. We hope to see all of Beach Street’s votes!
Remember, you don’t have to know the words to a song to enjoy the music, the beat, and most importantly its culture and where it came from.
Before signing off today’s announcements, we have a Hispanic Heritage Month trivia question:
From which country did Latin American countries declare their independence?
Mexico
Spain
Brazil
¡Feliz mes de herencia hispana! Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
