Support Recruiting

Welcome to the Support Team Recruiting Page!

These teams provide support for the Lindsay wildlife rehabilitation efforts, but do not include actual animal care. New volunteers that don't have much animal handling experience yet are also welcome to join a Support Team if you have, or want to learn, the necessary skills.

Cage Repair

From the Cage Repair Team Manager, Hermann Welm:

  • The "Lindsay Sewing Circle” is seeking a few talented (or not-so-talented) volunteers who’d like to stay busy over the winter months. We need to check over and repair every one of the hospital’s fifty, or so, bird cages! The Sewing Circle will meet every Tuesday afternoon, for three hours, 1 PM to 4 PM, to work on the cage linings in the Bird Room. We’ll start on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, and end when all cages have been repaired, usually after about six weeks.

  • Please note that this is NOT a “drop-in” effort; we would expect you to be there for most, if not all, of those weeks. It is far too complicated and time consuming to teach new members how to do this!

  • On the “Good News” side, we have arranged for these volunteers to get double — yes, DOUBLE — their usual pay! Also...if you attend the sessions and become proficient in cage netting skill, the CE burrowing owl will leave 0.5 hours of Wildlife Rehabilitation Continuing Education credit in your holiday stocking...assuming it's still hanging from your mantel. You'll also get a nifty Cage Repair/Construction icon for your name badge.

  • If you are interested in assisting or have questions, please contact Hermann Welm (hwelm@comcast.net)

Hotline Team

The Hotline Team is looking for a few good people.

Have you seen us at the desk near the hospital entry, on the phone? Have you seen us helping rescuers who have brought in animals? Who are we? We are the Hotline Team. We staff hospital reception from 9 am to 5 pm every day of the busy season, April 1 through September 30. We answer calls from the public about injured or orphaned animals, "nuisance" animals, general wildlife questions, and requests for status on an animal in our care. We "accession" native animals into hospital care, and counsel rescuers on the options for non-native animals which we do not take into care.

Every good veterinary hospital has people on the front line, dealing with the public. In the busy season, the Lindsay Hospital is no exception. If you are interested in public contact and want to help hospital staff in real time, the Hotline needs help. We work in shifts of 9 am to 1 pm and 1 pm to 5 pm. You may do one shift or more if you choose. A good working knowledge of the hospital and Bay Area wildlife is helpful. Lots of reference materials are at hand at the Hotline desk, and mentoring is provided at the start.

Sound like your cup of tea? Contact the Hospital Volunteer Manager to arrange a sample "shadow" shift!

Outreach

The Lindsay has a presence at many local fairs, festivals, and events. The booth/table is usually manned by volunteers from the various Lindsay departments: Docents, Museum Interpreters, AE, Hospital. Participation in local events gives us a chance to relate information about native wildlife to the public as well as an opportunity to recruit new members and volunteers. If you are interested in being considered for a Hospital Outreach Team, please notify the Hospital Volunteer Manager. (1/24/17)
