Academic Progress: What Is It?
To assist students in staying on course, Western Sydney University assesses their academic progress.
After enrolling, you have to finish the subjects needed to advance through your program and graduate. Poor academic performance is identified via progress checks, which also provide you with a chance to improve your performance and get guidance and counseling about your options. Additionally, it keeps you from incurring large fees due to persistently subpar academic performance.
General Progression Rule (GPA)
A Students’ academic progress is now assessed based on their overall Term Grade Point Average (GPA) following the official results release date in their most recent term of study.
The following information is a summary of the key progression requirements. Full information regarding progression requirements is available in the Progression policy.
Good Standing
Good Standing indicates that a student is making satisfactory progress in the program of study.
At Risk
At Risk identifies students who are at risk of not satisfactorily meeting Progression Rules and is an indicator that a student needs to take action to improve their progression in their program.
If you are notified as At Risk it is recommended that you discuss your circumstances with your Student Advisor.
Conditional Enrolment
Conditional Enrolment identifies students who are not satisfactorily meeting the Progression Rules.
Conditional Enrolment is designed to help support the student succeeding in their studies by reducing the amount of credit points a student can study in a term.
If you are notified as being on Conditional Enrolment, you may only enrol for a maximum of 20 credit points per trimester.
A student will continue on Conditional Enrolment until the next Progression Check is completed at which point their Academic Standing and Progression Outcome may change in line with the Progression Rules.
Exclusion
Exclusion identifies students who have not met Progression Rules.
If you are notified as being placed on Exclusion it means your enrolment at the University is cancelled for 12 months. During this time, you are prohibited from studying at Western Sydney University.
After your Exclusion period has ended, you can apply for re-admission to the University through the normal channels not less than one year from the date the Exclusion was applied. Re-admission is not automatic and subject to approval as per the Admission Policy.
A student will not be:
a. Placed on Conditional Enrolment without having been first placed on At Risk for at least a term (except in the circumstance identified in clause (*)), or
b. Excluded without having first been placed on Conditional Enrolment for at least a term.
Students who are placed on At Risk or Conditional Enrolment will return to Good Standing when their GPA reaches the threshold outlined in the table above.
(*) Student’s may be placed on Conditional Enrolment following their first term of study if their GPA is within the Conditional Enrolment or Exclusion threshold outlined in the table above.
Subject Progression Rule
If you fail a non-elective subject (or its equivalent) twice you will be placed on Conditional Enrolment and remain on Conditional Enrolment until you pass that subject (or its equivalent). You will be Excluded where you have failed the same or equivalent non-elective subject three times.
If you return from a period of Exclusion and fail the same subject (or its equivalent) for a fourth time, you will be excluded for a further 12 months and will not be permitted to re-enrol for any program that includes this non-elective subject (or its equivalent).
A Non-elective subject refers to any subject that is mandatory for a student to complete in order to graduate from their program. This includes any core subjects as well as any mandatory subjects in any field of study.
Progression Show Cause
If you have been identified for Conditional Enrolment or Exclusion from study, you will be notified in MyWSUVN. Your first step after receiving notification will be to decide if you want to submit a Show Cause application as to why you should not be placed on Conditional Enrolment or Excluded.
