George "Buck" Smith
Contributor
George “Buck” Smith has been a major contributor and supporter of Warren County Athletics for over two decades. Buck grew up and attended school in Madison County, VA. After graduation from Madison High School in 1988, he attended Eastern Mennonite University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Education in 1993. He then earned his Master’s degree in Athletic Administration in 2001 from James Madison University.
Buck came to Warren County in 2001 when he was named WCHS Activities Director. While serving as athletic director, Buck implemented a number of different initiatives, developed programs, and created policy which helped grow Warren County Athletics into a leader in the area. Many of the programs and initiatives Buck created are now staples of athletic programs around the state. Buck was the founder and chairman of the WCHS athletics Hall of Fame from 2002-2022 and he developed and implemented a comprehensive marketing & fundraising program for WCHS athletics. Buck increased Warren County athletic participation numbers to a record high, developed and implemented the full-time athletic training program, and wrote the WCPS athletic policy manual & handbook which are all still used for athletics in the County today. Buck served on numerous VHSL committees and was director of tournaments at the district, region, and state level. He is a VIAAA and NIAAA lifetime member.
In 2007 Buck was named Director of Activities/Athletics (Division Level). In the position he helped in the transition as Warren County split into two high schools. He was responsible for the organization, operation and coordination of the athletic programs for the Warren County Public Schools. He served in this position until 2010 when he became the Director of Human Resources. During this time he continued to support athletics in the county as both central office liaison and mentor for athletics. In addition he was a member of Warren County Parks and Recreation Committee. In 2021 he was appointed Assistant Superintendent for Administration where he served until his retirement this past July.
Quote from Mr. Smith: “It doesn’t matter what your background is or where you come from, if you have dreams and goals, that’s all that matters.”
