Lawrence M Shiflett graduated from Warren County High School in 1948. Throughout his high school career, he played football, basketball, and baseball. He was named All-State in basketball in his senior year. Following his graduation he attended Randolph Macon College where he was a 4 year letterman in football and 3 year letterman in baseball. After his graduation in 1963 he began his teaching and coaching career at Warren County. In 1973 he became Warren County's athletic director, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. During his tenure as coach, the Wildcats won district championships in football, golf, and baseball. The cats won region championships in softball and golf.
