KHB Advertising in School Blds, on School Property, & through School Prpty

ADVERTISING IN SCHOOL BUILDINGS, ON SCHOOL GROUNDS, ON SCHOOL PROPERTY,
AND THROUGH SCHOOL PUBLICATIONS

The School Committee will place limits on advertising (both temporary and permanent) of commercial products or services in school buildings, on school grounds, on school property, and through school publications for the following reasons:

  1. The school system should provide students, parents, and employees some measure of protection from exploitation by commercial organizations.

  2. The school system should not give the public the impression of generally endorsing or sanctioning commercial organizations.

The intent of this policy is to minimize exposure to students of advertising of commercial organizations.

Temporary Advertising

Following these guiding statements, temporary advertising of commercial products or services (e.g. posters) will not be permitted in school buildings, on school grounds or on school property.

Publications of the School District will not contain any advertising. However, this policy will not prohibit advertising 1) in the community section of electronic communications sent by the District, or 2) in student publications that are published by student organizations, subject to administration controls, or 3) in commercially sponsored, free teaching aids if the content thereof is approved by the administration, or 4) through logos incorporated into school curriculum materials.

Permanent Advertising

Also following these guiding statements, in special cases, permanent advertising of commercial products or services (e.g. names of organizations printed on scoreboards) may be permitted in school buildings, on school grounds or on school property with the permission of the Superintendent and the approval of the School Committee and subject to the following criteria.

Permanent advertising may only take place on donated capital items where the related item:

  • Has a useful life of 5 years or more and a value greater than $20,000

  • Is appropriate for a school environment and/or program

  • Has been reviewed by the Superintendent or his/her designee for safety and compatibility with existing equipment, programs, materials, and curriculum

  • Has no undesirable or hidden costs; if there are ongoing costs, there needs to be confirmation that these costs can be covered within the annual operating budget without negatively impacting the school program

  • Has no unacceptable restrictions on the school system. Any restrictions must be submitted in writing prior to consideration of acceptance of the gift

Direct solicitation of sales by commercial organizations or use of the name of the school system to promote any product will not be permitted by the School Committee.
