Personal, Social and Health Education

At The Vyne Community School the Personal, Social and Health Education is part of the whole school curriculum ensuring that students receive wide-ranging and balanced learning opportunities; statutory for Relationships and Sex Education and citizenship.

Curriculum

At the Vyne Community School our aim is to ensure that the school’s delivery of Personal, Social and Health Education supports students to be successful learners who make progress, can recognise their achievements and enjoy learning. In doing so enabling students to be confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and rewarding lives. Students will develop and enhance their existing skills so that they are responsible citizens, who make a positive contribution to society and are able to make well informed decisions about their lives and their futures.

Delivery is interactive, involving discussion and debate which is pupil led to ensure engagement – students learn to understand and appreciate themselves, making the most of their aptitude and skills and feel positive about embracing change. The programme will provide opportunities for students to discuss moral and social dilemmas, understand diversity and deal with challenges.

Learning Organisation

Personal, Social and Health Education is delivered for one lesson every week through scheduled drop-down days and through assemblies and tutor time. The drop-down days allow Personal Development to be delivered over a longer continuous period and are responsive to the needs of a particular year group. They are planned carefully with year leaders and the inclusion team as well as tutors. The programme is flexible and tailored to each year groups needs therefore the following overviews may be subject to change. We follow the guidance set out by the Department of Education.

Additional Information

We work in conjunction with Hampshire Local Education Authority to ensure that our curriculum supports local needs. The drop-down days are flexible so that we can adapt these to each year groups individual needs – Year Leaders and the Inclusion Team are also involved in identifying topics that need to be covered.

How we achieve our aims

All lessons have clear rules which are agreed at the start of the academic year. Teachers provide students with the necessary information on where they can get help - this will include services provided by the school, local and national agencies where appropriate. Statements by staff on sensitive issues are in line with the guidelines provided by the school, Hampshire and national agencies. The information provided is purely factual and objective. Teachers use materials that are age appropriate. Staff are vigilant for any concerns that they consider to be defined as child protection and the correct procedures are followed.
