Andrei Vyshinsky argues (Doc. #14) that the Marshall Plan was a way to make European countries "directly dependent on the interests of American monopolies."Â The United States is attempting to influence all of Europe, even countries that might prefer Soviet-style Communism, through its financial might. This contradicts the agreements made during World War II about self-determination.
The U.S. CIA reported that Soviet influence has helped in the "establishment of a Communist police state in Czechoslovakia [which] has...diminished the possibility of compromise" (Doc. #24) between pro-democracy and Communist forces. In a country where free elections was supposed to determine the government, the Communist forces had illegally seized power of Czechoslovakia. This contradicts the agreements made during World War II about self-determination.
