Stanley was a British American explorer of central Africa, famous for his rescue (1867-1871) of the Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone and for his discoveries in and development of the Congo region. Failing to gain British support for his plans to develop the Congo region, Stanley found more success with King Leopold II of Belgium, who was eager to tap Africa's wealth. In 1879, with Leopold's support, Stanley returned to Africa where he worked to open the lower Congo to commerce by the construction of roads.
As yet the Congo basin is a blank, fruitless waste, a desolate and unproductive area. ... It has been our purpose to fill this blank with life, to redeem this waste, to plant and sow that the dark man may gather, to vivify the wide, wild lands so long forgotten by Europe. But cursed be he or they who, animated by causeless jealousy and spirit of mischief, will compel us to fire our station, destroy our work so conspicuously begun, and abandon Africa to its pristine helplessness and savagery.
