Bien Aimee Ishimwe is a junior at Research Laboratory High School in Buffalo, New York. Last summer, she was a paid intern for the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and plans to participate in the same internship program this summer once the labs are re-opened. Bien writes, "It's my 3rd and final year on the bioinformatics team and it has been a great pleasure, I will 100% miss running blasts."

Dayna Flood is a senior at Research Laboratory High School. She has been participating in bioinformatics research for three years and finds it to be extremely fascinating. Danya wants to utilize her knowledge of bioinformatics to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. In the fall, Dayna will begin studying biochemistry at Daemen College.

Annotation of the Bacillus anthracis str. Ames Genome including Locus Tags BA_0852 and BA_0855

Abstract: Two consecutive genes BA_0852 and BA_0855 from the bacteria Bacillus anthracis str. Ames were annotated using the collaborative genome annotation website GENI-ACT. This bacterium is a nonmotile bacteria that forms spores which can be used in the Biological weapon, Anthrax. The Genbank proposed gene product name for each gene was assessed in terms of the general genomic information, amino acid sequence-based similarity data, and structure-based evidence from the amino acid sequence. Cellular localization data was also used to determine proper annotation. The Genbank proposed gene product name did not differ significantly from the proposed gene annotation for each of the genes in the group and as such, the genes appear to be correctly annotated by the database. Both genes play a role in ABC transporters within Bacillus anthracis.
