「ヴェーバーの官僚制に関する研究は，官僚制を合理的なものと考えすぎると批判される一方，彼の支配に関する研究は，その合理的な面を十分に考慮していないとして非難された．しかし前者の批判は，専制的支配者のもとで官僚の権謀術数に関するヴェーバーの詳細な議論を無視しており，後者の非難は，近代国家の生成過程における形式的思考の発展を取り扱った法社会学の全内容を看過している」(R.ベンデックス著,折原浩訳,1966,『マックス・ウェーバー：その学問の全体像』,中央公論社:5)．

Weber's research on bureaucracy has been criticized for overemphasizing its rationality, while his studies on domination have been accused of neglecting its rational aspects. However, the former criticism ignores Weber's detailed discussion of the intrigues of officials under despotic rulers, while the latter overlooks the entire content of legal sociology, which deals with the development of formal thought in the process of the formation of modern states(Bendix, R., 1977, Max Weber An Intellectual Portrait, Berkeley: University of California Press).
