Have you ever wondered about the life of a crab? Crabs are awesome creatures; they live in every ocean! There are a gargantuan number of crab species, and they come in all sizes. I think crabs are very interesting crustaceans.
There is a mind-blowing number of species of crabs. In fact, there are over 6,700 species of crabs! The king of speed in the crab world is the Ghost Crab. They are one of the fastest species of crustaceans in the world. Have you ever dug your hand into the sand and found something trying to dig through your hand? Then you have found a little “crab” that I call sand piggies. Sadly, they’re not actually crabs, even though they are named “mole crabs.” Many creatures we consider crabs are not true crabs. True crabs tuck their tail into their shell, making it invisible, and they do not have more than 4 pairs of walking legs. They have two antennae between their eyes and nowhere else. Some crabs are huge, some are tiny, but this depends on the species.
Have you ever wondered how large or tiny crabs can get? From the depths of the Pacific to the oceans of Tasmania, they come in all sizes. The largest crab is the Japanese spider crab, at an absolutely enormous weight (for a crab) of 42 pounds in freedom units, and with their claws spanning 12 feet between them. In a close second, the Tasmanian giant crab weighs up to 39 pounds. The smallest crabs are the aptly named “Pea Crabs,” which could be mistaken for a sand grain, just 0.4 inches. There are so many sizes to explore.
The life of a crab is a simple one. Surprisingly to some, crabs have come to live in every ocean throughout the world, even in arctic conditions! Since they are omnivores, this journey was far easier as they had a wider diet. They also spread very easily due to having large spawns of crabs every breeding season. Depending on the species, crabs can release over 200,000 eggs per season! Also they even communicate through throwing their pincers around and/or drumming. Crabs have diverse and interesting lives.
Crabs are foamy, snappy, and magnificently fascinating creatures. There is an unbelievable amount of crab species. They come in a massive range of sizes. They live simple lives. They range from speedy fellows to crabs who live far under the sand. The world is a perfect place for remarkable crabs.
