The Mysterious Lives of Arctic Foxes

  Brrrr! It sure is cold! How do arctic foxes survive out here?  Join me as I dive into the wonderful world of arctic foxes!  We'll explore their homes, how they get food, and what they look like, so come on in!

  Let's start with an obvious question. What is an arctic fox? An arctic fox is a relative of the cat and lives in the icy cold regions of Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, Russia, Canada, and Northern Europe. When an arctic fox is looking for a home, it will often be found digging in the snow. If you're wondering why, it's because arctic foxes dig holes, then jump into them, and cover them up. Some arctic foxes make burrows by digging holes near rocks, and then they dig under the rocks and use the rocks as protection from their predators. Now let's explore the life of an arctic fox in real life!

  A small white creature carefully makes its way across the thick ice, searching for a place to catch some prey. It finally spots a thin patch and uses its sharp claw to make a circle. As it completes the circle, it uses its soft paws to push on the ice. It then falls through, and a fish is exposed, trying to figure out what happened. The creature backs up and jumps into the bone-chilling water face-first. It catches the fish and shakes itself dry. The majestic creature then slides away into the night. As it slowly creeps away, it enters a patch of moonlight. After the arctic fox is revealed, it runs into the shadows, dropping the fish in its run. The fox then spots some berries and carries them carefully away towards a small hole.

  The small white fox gracefully bounds across the thick snow to find her burrow. Two little kits are sleeping, curled up into little balls. The mother watches them lovingly. She turns to cover the burrow up in soft snow. As she returns, the kits have awoken, bouncing and playing with one another. The mother drops the berries she was carefully holding in her mouth, and the kits begin to eat. After the kits have finished, there is barely any left for the mother. Winter is a hard time for all foxes, especially arctic foxes. The mother fox eats happily. Most arctic foxes are lucky to have any food at all. As the kits keep playing, the mother lies down to sleep. Soon after, the father comes back. Male arctic foxes are called “dogs”, even though they are a relative of the cat. The father lies down and watches the kits happily. As night falls, the fox family is sound asleep.

  Arctic foxes have pretty interesting lives, right? Arctic foxes are definitely my favourite animals! They are wonderful inhabitants of the frigid conditions.
