For this collaborative project we decided to research different ways to make packaging universal/adjustable. A template of packaging that can be upscale and adjusted to a variety of objects.
For my part I focused on smaller scale objects, so using a previous mesh I 3D models a box that could fit an object around 3 inches. On I created the box shape with 3D panels I added seams and UV unwrapped the box.
With the UV map as a template i was able to alter it in illustrator to create different box templates ready for the laser cutter.
This was the first model I created.
I created tabs at the sides that once interlocked held together with tension, but they could also be suported with a piece of tape
The model fit neatly in the template, but the final wrap of the longer piece was not as secure and had over hang
With the second template I fix the security of the larger tab by making it taper towards the end
I also experimented with a wrapping pattern on bottom and top tap. I wanted the material to wrap closer to the object and create a bit of padding.
The taper did help the larger tab fit more secure and neatly in the box.
Even with the laser etched patter it did not fold as nicely to create patting
