What are your favorite hobbies or pastimes?
I love spending time outdoors, making art that's fun to create and involves experimentation.
What studio processes are you currently involved with
Currently, I find myself gravitating towards assemblage and painting. I’ve been involved in processes that use found objects and require thinking about how to assemble said parts.
What images, objects, and processes do you find yourself attracted to?
I find myself attracted to patterns, harmonious color scales, mosaic imagery, and 80s to 90s-inspired artworks.
What issues (locally, nationally, internationally) capture your attention?
As a Mexican immigrant, I’ve found that the majority of my art, as of late, touches on topics such as immigration, legality, wealth, race, gender, and society.
How can 3D scanning and 3D printing be used to create contemporary extractions of traditional Mexican beadwork?
I want to learn more about the significance of Mexican Beadwork. It is important for me to understand both the technical and historical significance of how the work is created. To do this, I must research how the tradition was developed, what other contemporary artists are doing within the culture, and the symbolism found within the artwork.
Huichol Beadwork is known as Chaquira. It's characterized by bright colors and intricate patterns. From a distance, one could mistake the patterns for the mandalas seen in eastern culture, and in a way, they do share characteristics.
The tapestry seen above is another exemplifier of what this artwork can take the form of. “The Museum of Beadwork” studies and presents the technique, history, and progression of the art of beadwork. They discuss how, in Huichol culture, the beadwork is a presentation of the soul.
Touching on how “The beading style known as Huichol (pronounced wet-chol) is generally ascribed to a process of covering a 3-dimensional form in a single layer of beads, like a mosaic, but with distinctive patterns using geometric shapes and bright colors.” It is from this definition and research that my project began to transform.
The artwork above was created by Coloresdecor on Instagram and exemplifies what Chaquira is capable of in a sculptural form.
