Kampas in KYV
Kampa is the swinging of the voice in the transition from an independent svarita (abhinihata, kṣaipra, praśliṣṭa and nitya svarita) to a following independent svarita or udātta. In the Taittirīya Śākhā kampas are restricted to a following independent svarita.
1. Kampas in the Taittirīya Saṁhitā
1.1 Long Kampa preceding an independent Svarita
sáḥ + apáḥ + abhí + amriyata => sò 'pò 'bhyàmriyata
(abhinihatasvarita ò placed before abhinihatasvarita ò)
(abhinihatasvarita ò placed before kṣaiprasvarita à)
Note: In the audio recording the low pitch is used for the anudātta, the middle pitch for udātta and the high pitch for svarita. The svarita sò is pronounced in three parts: first part só as udātta, second part ò as svarita and third part o as anudātta. “…hanthsó-ò-o pó-ò-o bhyàmríyáta…”
1.2 Short Kampa preceding an independent Svarita
vīryàm + ví + abhajanta => vīryàṁ vyàbhajanta (nityasvarita à placed before kṣaiprasvarita à )
Note: According to Pāriśikṣā 160 the short kampa à has to be pronounced as long ā̀. Audio recording: “vīryā́-ā̀-aṁ vyàbhájánta…”. Here the short svarita à in vīryàm is pronounced in three parts: first part yā́ as udātta, second part ā̀ as svarita and third part a as anudātta.
2. Kampas in the Maitrāyaṇīya Saṁhitā
2.1 Long Kampa preceding an Udātta
prasavé + aśvínoḥ => prasavè 'śvínoḥ (abhinihatasvarita è placed before udātta í)
Note: In Devanāgarī the kampa is marked with the number 3 preceding vè and è is shown with anudātta. This is the first kampa in MS.
Audio recording: “pràsave-è-e śvínòr bāhúbhyā̀ṁ…”. Here the long svarita è in prasavè is pronounced in three parts: first part ve as anudātta, second part è as svarita and third part e as anudātta.
2.2 Short Kampa preceding an Udātta
urú + antárikṣam => urvàntárikṣam (kṣaiprasvarita à placed before udātta á )
Note: Kampa is marked with the number 3 preceding và and à is shown with anudātta.
Audio recording: “varṣávṛ`ddhámásyurvā-ā̀-antárìkṣaṁ vī̀hi…”. Here the short svarita à is pronounced in three parts: first part vā́ as udātta, second part ā̀ as svarita and third part a as anudātta.
