Following their volunteer experience at the Surrey Food Bank in August, 15 members of the Buddha's Light International Association (BLIA) Vancouver Fang Guang Subchapter, returned on November 8 to assist with food distribution and inventory management. The group also donated funds, aiming to bring warmth and comfort during the cold winter months.
After their initial visit in August, many members expressed a desire to continue serving the community. With the arrival of the holiday season, including Thanksgiving and Christmas, another opportunity was arranged. Coincidentally, the day of the visit aligned with a school holiday in Surrey, allowing members to bring their children along. The group included four children and two teenagers, making the experience especially meaningful.
Diego, the coordinator of activities at the Surrey Food Bank, explained that the number of people seeking food assistance has risen significantly due to the economic downturn, with a 23% increase this year alone. Each day, an additional 5–6 eligible families sign up for support. Currently, the food bank serves over 15,000 individuals monthly, providing food for around 300 families daily. However, donations have been steadily declining, creating immense pressure on their resources. The shortage is particularly acute between May and September each year. To maximize support, the food bank limits eligible families to one visit every two weeks (or once a week for pregnant women), with food quantities strictly regulated based on family size.
The day’s volunteer work was divided into two parts: one group managed food distribution, while the other sorted and organized donated food in the warehouse. Yvonne, a senior food bank volunteer, provided detailed instructions on food classification and expiration date identification. She emphasized, “We must give food that is clean and fresh, so people won’t feel like we’re offering them something unwanted.” This sentiment of respect and equality was evident in every detail of the process.
Five children from Fo Guang families, volunteering for the first time with their parents, were assigned to the food distribution booths. Interacting directly with those in need, they were surprised by how many people around them struggled to secure daily meals. This experience made them more grateful for their own privileged lives and the support of their parents. They expressed a newfound determination to give back to society in the future.
Claire, a member of the BLIA Young Adult Division (YAD) participating for the second time, shared that she was deeply moved and inspired by the sight of so many volunteers serving the community. Many members also reflected that while helping others, they developed a stronger sense of social responsibility, which also enhanced their personal growth. They noted that although individual contributions may seem small, collective efforts can create a better society.
For several consecutive years, BLIA Vancouver Fang Guang Subchapter has raised funds for the Surrey Food Bank during the winter months, with members generously donating. This year, in addition to organizing a team to serve the community, they also donated funds, earning heartfelt gratitude from the food bank.
