On September 16, the Canadian branch of the North America Buddha's Light Choir, composed of members from Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa, traveled to Malaysia to participate in the 2024 Buddha's Light Cup Choir Competition held at the Encore Melaka National Theatre. Under the guidance of Venerable Chueh Fan and Venerable Ru Zhong from Fo Guang Shan in Toronto, the choir of 39 members earned the "Three Acts of Goodness Award."
This competition gathered 17 choirs from five continents, performing Sounds of Human World compositions by Venerable Master Hsing Yun that express the beauty of human connection through music. The pieces conveyed the compassion and wisdom of Buddhism through a series of heartfelt songs. Acting President of the International Buddha’s Light Association, Venerable Cirong, remarked, “In order to spread the Dharma, the Master [Venerable Master Hsing Yun] composed over a hundred pieces of music. Music can cultivate our character and guide us forward. Chanting, bowing, and practicing Dharma with music fills us with joy!”
The Canadian branch performed "The Wonderful Path of Mountains and Rivers" with great power, accompanied by the big drum.
The choir confirmed their song choice, "The Wonderful Path of Mountains and Rivers," in July, completing the arrangement in August. The Canadian branch of the North America Buddha's Light Choir practiced diligently for just one month, with intense rehearsals taking place in Malaysia two days before the competition. Under the guidance of conductor Lu Ling, members made the most of every available moment, rehearsing tirelessly to make adjustments. All members set aside the fatigue from long-distance travel and time zone differences, uniting their efforts for the competition. As the team leader, Venerable Chueh Fan accompanied the group throughout, providing support, encouragement, and capturing many beautiful moments through photos and videos.
