Teaching Development Funds funds are available for USF adjuncts to pursue work in the areas of course development, student learning, and related pedagogical issues. Most funds are awarded for expenses incurred in attending conferences or workshops that will enhance your teaching (not your research or presentation of your research). You also can apply to be reimbursed for materials and supplies related to teaching development. Applications can only be submitted in the academic year when you are actually teaching at USF. Applications may be submitted for conferences in the near future (such as the following semester or summer) or for reimbursement for expenses related to conferences attended in the recent past and in same fiscal year (ie in the fall for the previous summer, or the spring for the previous fall), but be aware that if your application is denied, you may not be reimbursed for those expenses.
Each school receives a proportion of the total funds available, depending on the number of units taught by adjuncts. Arts & Sciences hires the greatest number of adjuncts, so it gets the highest portion.
Please take advantage of these funds that we have negotiated for you.
Regarding TDF's submitted in the spring for the following summer: because the summer initiates the following fiscal year, please see the following revised policy:
Applications submitted in the the Spring 2020 TDF cycle for summer conferences in the following fiscal year (that is, June-August 2020) will be considered for adjunct faculty who will be teaching the 2020-21 academic year. If there is doubt as to whether you will be teaching in the following year, please submit your TDF application for reimbursement in the Fall 2020 cycle.
While faculty who submit TDFs in the spring for conferences the following summer will be notified if their proposal is accepted or rejected at the same time as other applicants, the official letter of acceptance will be sent the following fall, when the faculty member's active teaching status is confirmed and the new fiscal year has begun. TDF funds will then be available following receipt of the TDF approval letter.
As of fall 2019, all USF schools (CAS, SONHP, SOE, and SOM) now follow the same application protocol, with the same due date and reviewed by the same campus-wide committee that consists of adjuncts and members of the administration. Applications are due on the first Monday after October 15 and the first Monday after February 15. Policies and application can be found here: https://gnosis.usfca.edu/tdf. Note that faculty must submit an application form. All information and materials can be found at this site: https://myusf.usfca.edu/arts-sciences/faculty-resources/teaching-development-fund
