Awards

There are three types of awards that adjuncts can apply for each year, awarded by the PTFA and USF:

  • The Distinguished Adjunct Teaching Award (up to 5 will be given),

  • the Sr. Vicky Siu Award for Outstanding Contributions and Service to the University of San Francisco (up to 1 award will be given); and

  • the Innovations in Instruction Award (up to 1 award will be given).

Eligibility for adjunct awards is open only to USF part-time faculty from the School of Management, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Nursing and Health Professions, and the School of Education. Applicants must have taught at USF during the academic year in which the award is given.

Each recipient will be honored at the annual USF Service and Merit Awards Ceremony and at the USFFA-PT Awards Dinner at the end of Spring Semester.

  • 2020 USF-PTFA Dinner: Wednesday, April 29, 6:00 PM, Jannah Restaurant, 1775 Fulton Street

  • 2020 Merit Awards Ceremony: Thursday April 30, 3:30 PM, McLaren Complex

The Deadline for 2020 applications will be Friday, February 28th, 11:59 PM. All materials must be submitted online through the Gnosis system. Late materials will not be accepted through other submission means, and it is you responsibility to make sure that you have submitted a complete application. Applications will be submitted here:

NOMINATIONS

Nominations for awards may be made by:

• Adjunct faculty may self-nominate

• Nominations may be made by department chairs or program heads

• Nominations may be made by colleagues such as fellow faculty, administrators, supervisors, etc.

• Nominations may not be made by students

NOMINATORS:

If you are nominating an adjunct faculty for any of the awards listed below, please compose a letter including the following information, and submit it in pdf to the nominee, so that she/he may include your letter with his/her supporting materials. You must notify the nominee, as the committee will not notify nominees. It is recommended that nominators inform the nominee of your intent to nominate no later than February 18th, so that she/he has time to compile their supporting materials for submission by the March 1st deadline.

  • the nominee’s name, email address, telephone number, department and college

  • why the nominee is deserving in light of the specific award criteria

  • your name(s) and contact information, if you are nominating an adjunct faculty

  • self-nominations are accepted.

Nominators may apply on behalf of a nominee, but will then need to submit all required materials for the award themselves. Only one person will be allowed to create an account and submit materials. If you would like to nominate someone, but do not intend to gather all of the supporting materials, we recommend that you instead email a pdf of your nomination to the nominee as stated above.

We may not confer all of the awards in a given year, if suitable applications are not submitted.

DISTINGUISHED ADJUNCT TEACHING AWARD

Each spring since 1990, the University of San Francisco Part-time Faculty Association and the University of San Francisco will confer up to five awards of $2000 each to adjunct faculty. (The Distinguished Adjunct Teaching Award shall not be awarded to a member more than once every five years.) We invite you to self-nominate or nominate an adjunct faculty for the annual Distinguished Adjunct Teaching Award. Criteria for selection are:

  • a minimum of 16 units of teaching need to be completed in order to apply

  • evidence over a period of time at USF of extraordinary dedication to teaching and students

  • innovative and gifted approaches to teaching and to the classroom

The following materials will be required in the online submission through gnosis, and will be used in determining the award recipient. More than one file may be submitted in each field, but at least two files must be submitted in the final field for letters of recommendation.

    • Letter of Nomination (self-nomination or nomination from a superior or colleague at USF). Only one nomination letter per application. Other letters of support should be filed with "letters of recommendation."

  • Curriculum Vitae

    • Course Materials: Relevant course syllabi and any significant outlines, handouts, or exams that show exceptional dedication to teaching

  • Student Evaluations: Please including student evaluations for no more than the last 3 years

  • Letters of Recommendation: Relevant letters or testimonials from at least two people other than students (colleagues, or administrators from USF only). Testimonials from students are encouraged, with particular weight given to unsolicited testimonials (Cards, letters, e-mail, etc)

The letter of nomination should be no longer than two pages in length and it must include the following information:

  • the nominee’s name, email address, telephone number, department and college

  • why the nominee is deserving in light of the specific award criteria

  • your name(s) and contact information, if you are nominating an adjunct faculty

  • self-nominations are accepted.

NOMINATORS MUST NOTIFY THE NOMINEE SO THAT S/HE CAN SUBMIT APPLICATION MATERIALS by the same Friday February 28, 2020 deadline. We recommend informing the nominee by February 17th at the latest. The committee does not notify nominees. Nominators must email your nomination as a PDF attachment to the nominee, so that the nominee can include the nomination letter in their online submission materials.

The committee's decision will be based on the quality of the materials submitted by the candidate, not the quantity. The materials should include achievements only at USF and not from other institutions. Up to five selected recipients will each receive a framed award. The selected recipients will each receive a framed award and a $2000.00 cash award. Their names will also be placed in the May commencement program.

THE SR. VICKY SIU AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS AND SERVICE TO THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO

    • Statement of Service: A letter describing your contribution to the USF Community, including who was served by this activity and how did those served benefit from your contribution. Indicate how long you have served the university and cite the contributions you have made over time. Uncompensated service is appropriate to include. Your statement should address how you assessed the benefits or success of your contribution for the students. For example: How many people participated or attended? What were the goals for the projects or events? You might also include supporting materials such as event announcements, programs, or information that was distributed. Your letter might discuss the following:

    • How you taught a valuable skill by setting up workshops for students or the larger USF community

    • How you arranged and conducted a lecture, forum, or service event on campus

    • How you contributed by advising a student group or organization

  • Letters of Recommendation: Relevant letters or testimonials from at least two people other than students (colleagues, or administrators from USF only). Testimonials from students are encouraged, with particular weight given to unsolicited testimonials (Cards, letters, e-mail, etc).

THE INNOVATIONS IN INSTRUCTION AWARD

    • A detailed description of how you implemented these techniques

    • How do or did you evaluate the learning outcomes and benefit for the students

    • Course Materials: Relevant course syllabi and any significant outlines or handouts or exams

  • Letters of Recommendation: Relevant letters or testimonials from at least two people other than students (colleagues, or administrators from USF only). Testimonials from students are encouraged, with particular weight given to unsolicited testimonials (Cards, letters, e-mail, etc)
