Here's the page I'm going to use to explain just thought on what going on what brining the plants in for Winter. What having a houseful of wants that need repotting or making clones.

Take notice of the anaerobic roots. These roots sit unoxygenated water. Unlike hydroponics roots which are white and long. These are stiff with few branches. Their also very tough.

This system works both Anaerobically and Aerobically. This is a good example. The medium in the mix allow three different root types to grow. At least 80% of what good on with a plant goes on under ground with the root system. The very top where the roots are driest are the air roots. About two inches below are the nutrient roots. These roots are moist. The insert sets in a container that has a "Pee" hole about an inch an half below the lids create a second layer. That area makes roots that can be dry or wet. This area is for absorbing nutrients. The water it gets below to mix with. Because the containers are sealed the only way for water to evaporate is thru the leaves. A filling will last for months. This means roots can be wet or dry. That means even if the water dries out it still stays moist from the container moisture in the air for days. Those roots you see sticking out the last half of the insert are the Anaerobic roots. Roots down here get no oxygen. But they do transfer water. There's quite a few types of bacteria that live in those environments in a boom and bust cycle. See the roots and the anaerobic bacteria grew up together in the same environment. Those roots "taste" the same as everything else in the environment so the the bacteria feeds on the plants waste rather than on the roots. The bacteria dies off and it's bodies feed the plant.
