n. when the motive for economics is primarily profit/gain, as opposed to meeting desires or societal needs

ex. there is a profit motive for war, the defense industry supplying the government, and for making housing and healthcare expensive/inaccessible, because there's no co-pay or rent people won't pay. The alternative is to die.
