One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus Monday afternoon, detention. Your characters: the brain, the beauty, the criminal, the athlete, and the outcast. One of them doesn’t leave detention alive and it seems his death is no accident because he was going to publish all of their secrets for the world and their friends to see. So who is the killer? And which one of them is lying? What I love most about this novel is that it is truly a page turner filled with twists and turns. This book is a fantastic read because it will provide you with a much needed distraction from the challenges you may be facing right now.
I Am Princess Xby Cherie Priest Best friends Libby and May create the fantastical heroine Princess X together, but May’s storytelling days end when Libby presumably dies in a car crash. A few years later, May runs into stickers of Princess X strewn across Seattle and discovers that Princess X’s legacy—and maybe even Libby, too—lives on. This book weaves in graphic novel elements to create a truly one-of-a-kind mystery and a beautiful celebration of female friendship.
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stievfater A magical realism novel with a group of teenagers searching for a dead king. It’s a mystery that seems to take over all our main characters’ lives as they discover a magical forest, the power of ley lines, and the energy of dead people. Plus, there are psychics and a prophecy and ghosts--what more could you ask for from a fantastical mystery? This is a completed series; book 2 is The Dream Thieves, book 3 is Blue Lily, Lily Blue and book 4 is The Raven King.
The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis This is a dark feminist novel that will resonate with everybody. It effortlessly balances moral questions, commentary on rape culture and how it effects teenagers, and morally grey characters that nestle deep into your heart. It’s not an easy read--in fact it’s hard and brutal at times--but the three main characters and their journeys will be ones you never forget. I would even say this is a necessary read. TW: rape, sexual assault, murder, violence, animal cruelty.

This book pulls no punches, but its words will burrow in your heart and stay there for a long time to come.
