SOLO, Not Alone.
New Work by Ruth Burotte
OPENING RECEPTION November 20th 6-9pm
November 20th - December 2021
Young Haitian-American artist Ruth Burotte cleverly depicts her superheroes influenced by Japanese Manga and American Hip-Hop making visible a future/present that is both dystopian and joyfully dissociated, to shift the paradigms of art today.
On the occasion of Miami Art Week 2021, Swampspace is thrilled to present new work by Ruth Burotte. In her first solo exhibition, Ruth transports the viewer through prodigious cultural strata with an installation of painting, projection and sound. Heavily influenced by Japanese Manga and American Hip-Hop, she cleverly depicts self-made superheroes wearing masks, capes and kicks, who wield the power to confront diabolical adversity. As a first generation Haitian American artist, Burotte’s work makes visible a future/present that is both dystopian and joyfully dissociated, to shift the paradigms of art.
SOLO, BUT NOT ALONE

“ Girls have to be strong to protect the men they love.” Naoko Takeuchi - Sailor Moon
On the occasion of Miami Art Week 2021, Swampspace is delighted to feature the recent work of Ruth Burotte. In her first solo exhibition a magical prodigy becomes evident. With the skill of a young wizard, Ruth taps the vast reservoir of imagination and magic from the fantastic contrasting worlds of Japanese Manga and American Hip-Hop culture. Her superheroes are the stuff of mythical ideology. They ascend from a flash of ether wearing masks and capes wielding the powers needed to confront and conquer diabolical adversity. Burotte’s work is the stuff of dreams and prayer, the embodiment of hope and faith we turn to when the ordinary looms insufficient.
Like the wise protege from sitcom The Boondocks, Ruth depicts the moral compass and inspiration for her community of first generation Haitian Americans. In a post-pandemic world of unseen villains, prolonged isolation and uncertainty, Ruth depicts the secret yearnings of our alter egos with ease, confidence and the emotional fortitude of a hero for our times.
