Being a kind and helpful friend means always trying to make others feel good and safe. It means sharing, caring, and helping, while a bully does the opposite by hurting others with words or actions.
Let's always choose to be kind and helpful!
We would like to acknowledge the Jaara people, the traditional custodians of the land on which we are meeting today, we acknowledge ancestors and elders past, present and emerging and commit ourselves to work actively for reconciliation and justice.
A quiet moment to pause, breathe, and bring our hearts and minds into God’s presence, preparing ourselves to pray with focus, gratitude, and openness.
Let us take a moment to pause… to breathe… to be still.
Breathe in God’s love… (pause) and breathe out any worries.
Breathe in God’s peace… (pause) and breathe out any distractions.
As we quiet our hearts, we open ourselves to God—who walks with us, speaks to us, and loves us completely.
Loving God, be with us now. Guide our hearts, our thoughts, and our words as we come together in prayer.
In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
A quiet moment to pause, listen, and open our hearts to God, allowing His presence to guide our thoughts, deepen our faith, and inspire us to live with love and kindness.
The Bible teaches us that love is very important. Jesus tells us to love one another, just as He loves us. This means being kind, patient, and caring to everyone—our friends, family, and even people we don’t know well. Love isn’t just about words; it’s about how we treat others every day.
As you read these verses, think about ways you can show love—maybe by sharing, helping, or using kind words. How can you make someone feel loved today?
Ephesians 4:32 – "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
Reflection Questions:
What does it mean to be kind and compassionate?
How does it feel when someone forgives you?
Can you think of a time when you forgave someone? How did it make you feel?
Why do you think Jesus wants us to forgive others?
John 13:34-35 – "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
Reflection Questions:
How did Jesus show love to others?
What are some ways you can show love to your friends and family?
How do you feel when someone is kind and loving to you?
Why do you think Jesus said that people will know we follow Him if we love others?
1 John 4:7-8 – "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."
Reflection Questions:
Where does love come from?
How can we show God's love to others?
How do you feel when you show love to someone else?
What are some ways we can practice love every day?
A moment to open our hearts to God, whether in asking for guidance, strength, and help or in giving thanks for His blessings, love, and presence in our lives.

Routine: Attention Signals
Description: What you expect the students to do when you require their full attention.
When to use: Whenever you require the student’s attention to give instructions or begin a teaching sequence.
What’s the point? This routine enables the teacher to quickly and easily gain all students attention. Using an attention signal enables teachers to keep a calm classroom by avoiding raising their voice which can be disrupting. It allows the teacher to transition from an interactive activity to an activity that requires attention to be focused on the speaker in a quick and calm manner.
Sequence:
Teacher: Explain to the students that you have a particular way of gaining their attention when you want to explain something or give specific instructions.
1. Teachers should identify their own attention signal.
Decide on a verbal and physical signal. The attention signal should be able to be used wherever your class is located (in class, outside the room etc). As such choose a signal that does not require specific conditions. (e.g: Flipping a switch would require you to stand near the switch in order to use the signal- so this is not appropriate).
Examples:
Teacher says: → Students respond:
🔹 "Eyes up" → "Tools down"
🔹 "Hands on top!" → "That means stop!"
🔹 "One, two" → "Eyes on you!"
🔹 "Class, class" → "Yes, yes!"
🔹 "Give me five" → (Students raise hand and say) "Up high!"
🔹 "1, 2, 3, waterfall" → (Students say "Shhh" while making a waterfall action with their hands.)
(These are just a few examples—many more attention signals can be used!)
2. Explain the complete sequence of the Attention Signal routine:
i. Teacher says attention cue.
e.g: ‘Give me five’ and raises their hand.
ii. Students return your signal.
e.g: ‘Up high’ and hold up their hand.
Each student should respond by stopping the activity, looking at the teacher and responding if appropriate.
iii. Hold your signal.
e.g: ‘Hold your hand in position until you have every student’s attention.’
iv. Once you have attention- begin instruction.
3. Let students practise the complete routine, one element at a time.
4. If students talk or do not follow an instruction, repeat the element of the routine that was not done correctly.
Problem Solving
Sometimes, problems at school—whether with friends, classmates, or learning—can feel tricky to solve on your own. That’s why your teachers are here! If something is making you upset, confused, or unsure, asking a teacher for help can make a big difference.
Teachers can help you:
🔹 Find fair and kind ways to solve conflicts.
🔹 Give advice on making good choices.
🔹 Support you when you feel worried or frustrated.
🔹 Make sure everyone feels safe and respected.
Asking for help is a smart and strong thing to do. You don’t have to handle everything alone—your teacher is here to listen and support you!
At St. Kilian's, we have a visual to help teach and remind us of what we can do when something is bothering us.
If something is bothering us we can;
Keep doing what I am doing.
This means to stay focussed on what I am doing. If that doesn't work, then try the next step.
I can move away.
This might mean moving away in another space in the room, or moving to a whole another new space.
This could also mean moving to another group of people.
If this doesn't work, then try the next step.
I can ask an adult for help.
If the first two steps didn't work, then you can ask an adult to help you solve your problem.
Hands On
At St. Kilian’s, we keep our hands and feet to ourselves to make sure everyone feels safe and respected. If a hands-on incident happens (like pushing, hitting, or grabbing), here’s what will happen:
A teacher will step in to stop the situation and check that everyone is okay.
The incident will be reported to all staff and Mrs. McSweeney and Mr. Podosky so they can follow up.
Parents will be informed about what happened.
A consequence will be given - 1 break off the yard
A restorative conversation will take place to help you understand what happened, why it wasn’t okay, and how to handle things better next time.
Our goal is to help everyone feel safe and supported while learning how to make positive choices and solve problems without using hands-on behaviour. If you ever feel unsafe, always talk to a teacher or trusted adult!
Random Acts of Kindness Week is an annual celebration dedicated to encouraging and spreading kindness in communities, schools, workplaces, and beyond. It is typically observed in the second full week of February, with Random Acts of Kindness Day falling on February 17th.
What is Random Acts of Kindness Week?
It’s a special week where we try to do extra kind things for others, just because it makes the world a better place!
What is kindness?
Kindness is being nice, helpful, and caring to others. It can be big, like helping someone who is hurt, or small, like giving a big smile.
Why do we celebrate it?
When we are kind, it makes us and others feel happy. It can turn someone's bad day into a good day!
How can we show kindness?
Say "thank you" to someone.
Help a friend clean up.
Give someone a high five or a smile.
Write a kind note for a friend or teacher.
Let someone go first in a game.
Remember: You don’t need a special day to be kind—you can do kind things every day!
Below are some different activities that explore joy, in particularly being thankful and sharing kindness. You might encourage students to explore how they could do some of these in their week this week.
Help a classmate who is struggling with their work.
Hold the door open for someone.
Say something nice to a friend or family member.
Help tidy up a shared space at home or school.
Share their snacks or lunch with someone who forgot theirs.
Invite someone to join in a game or activity.
Write a kind note or letter to someone who might need cheering up.
Draw a picture for someone to make them smile.
Compliment someone on their efforts or achievements.
Help a younger sibling or friend with a task or chore.
Share a toy or item with someone who doesn’t have one.
Thank a teacher or adult helper for their hard work.
Pick up litter and help keep their environment clean.
Say "good morning" or greet people with a smile.
Spend time with someone who looks lonely or sad.
Let someone go first in a line or game.
Make a homemade gift for someone special.
Help an elderly neighbour or relative with something they need.
Encourage someone who feels nervous or unsure.
Leave a kind note for someone to find.
Which act of kindness do you feel most excited to try? Why?
Can you think of someone in your life who could really use kindness today?
How do you think you’ll feel after doing something kind for someone else?
Have you ever had someone do something kind for you? How did it make you feel?
How do you think the person receiving your kindness will feel?
What might happen if we all tried to share kindness with people around us?
What’s a small act of kindness you can do every day?
How can your family or class make kindness something you practise together?
