USC wins Women's NCAA title

USC won the women's title at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene by one point over Georgia.

USC scored 53 points to edge out Georgia who had 52 points and Stanford who had 51 points, It was the first time in NCAA history that the top three teams finished within two points of each other.

With one event left and down by 9 points USC had to win the 4 x 400 relay to win all Georgia could do was watch without a team in the last race. Mid race it looked like USC had no chance of winning the relay with their athlete Kendall Ellis 30 meters behind the leaders, Ellis made up 15 meters on the home straight to catch Purdue's Jahneya Mitchell at the line to win the relay in 3 minutes, 27.06 seconds, and give the Trojans the 10 team points they needed to pass Georgia in the standings.

Arizona State’s Maggie Ewen won discus on the final throw of her college career

Ewen, a fifth-year senior, threw 198 feet, 5 inches on her final attempt to surpass defending champion Shadae Lawrence of Kansas State, who threw 195-09 immediately before Ewen’s turn.

Maggie Ewen also led from start to finish in shot put Thursday Ewen, opened with a throw of 61 feet, 5 3/4 inches and went on to win her second national outdoor title in 62-10 3/4.

She won hammer last year but fouled three times at a regional qualifying meet May 26 and did not qualify to defend her hammer title,

Oklahoma's Jessica Woodard finished second behind Ewen with a personal best throw of 61-3 1/2 and Stanford's Lena Giger was third (57-8 1/2). ASU's Samantha Noennig finished seventh (56-2).

Ewen is the collegiate record holder in shot put and hammer throw.

The hammer throw was won by Mississippi's Janeah Stewart, who edged Northern Arizona's Brooke Andersen by two inches with a throw of 239-3.
