Drew Hunter broke his national high school indoor mile record at the Millrose Games on Saturday. 2 weeks ago he had just become the third high schooler to run sub 4 indoors.
He also had just set a national HS record for the 3,000 meters. He is now indisputably the top young distance runner in the United States and one of the fastest in history.
He ran the Wanamaker Mile, in a 12-man field containing collegiate and professional runners, Hunter, 18, a senior at Loudoun Valley High School in Virginia, finished in fourth in 3 minutes 57.81 seconds.

this is the same track where he broke Alan Webb’s national indoor high school record in the mile two weeks ago, running a 3:58.25.
“Now that I’m into college, I have the chance to spend the rest of high school living almost like a professional runner; I can really prioritize the sport,” said Hunter, who will attend the University of Oregon,
Before Hunter, only Webb, an Olympian in 2004 and the American-record holder at 3:46.91, had run a sub-four-minute mile indoors as a high school student, and he did so only once. Only eight high school runners have ever broken the four-minute barrier, indoors or outdoors, and until Saturday, only Webb and the former world-record holder Jim Ryun had beaten 3:58.
“I think Drew’s very talented, and mentally he’s very tough,” said Andy Powell, the track coach at Oregon. “When you get a competitive kid from a great family, they can do extraordinary things.”
