8 Ducks named to all century team

SAN FRANCISCO - The Pac-12 announced its 52 member All-Century Men’s Track and Field team, Monday, which consisted of eight Oregon student-athletes.

The team was voted on by a panel of 35 consisting of coaches, former athletes, administrators and members of the media. The top two vote getters in each of the 19 events automatically qualified for the squad. The remaining 12 spots, including ties, were selected from a wildcard ballot consisting of the third, fourth and fifth place vote getters in each event. Athletes with two events next to their name finished in the top two in each of those events.

Joaquim Cruz (1983-84): Gold medal winner in the 800 at the 1984 Olympic Games and silver medalist in 1988…won the NCAA Championship in the 800 in 1983 then swept the 800 and 1,500 in 1984…school record holder in the 800 and ran the fastest time ever by a collegian, albeit outside the collegiate season…two-time Pac-12 Champion in the 800…Pac-12 Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 1984…still holds the ninth-fastest 1,500 time in NCAA history…holds the Pac-12 800 meter record.

Dyrol Burleson (1959-62): Won the NCAA Championship in the 1,500 in 1960 then repeated as the mile champion in 1961-62…three-time AAU Champion…part of the team that set a world record in the 4-mile in 1962…became the first person to break four minutes in the mile at Hayward Field…set American records in the 1,500 in 1960, the mile in 1960 and 1961 as well as the 2-mile in 1962…member of the Olympic team in 1960 and 1964 in the 1,500…U.S. 1,500 Champion in 1959 and mile champion in 1961 and 1963.

Matthew Centrowitz (2008-11): NCAA Champion at 1,500 meters in 2011…school record holder in the 1,500 with the sixth-fastest time in NCAA history…part of the school record team in the DMR…five-time All-American…won-three straight Pac-10 titles in the 1,500…U.S. Champion at 1,500 meters in 2011, 2013 and 2015…member of the 2012 Olympic team where he took fourth…bronze medalist at the 2011 IAAF World Championships and silver medalist in 2013.

Edward Cheserek (2014-Present): 10-time NCAA Track and Field Champion, winning the mile, 3,000 (twice), 5,000 (twice) and DMR (twice) indoors as well as the 5,000 and 10,000 (twice) outdoors…school record holder in the indoor 3,000…2014 USTFCCCA Indoor track Athlete of the Year…12-time All-American…2015 Pac-12 5,000 meter champion…two-time Bowerman Award Finalist.

Steve Prefontaine (1970-73): Once held the American record in eight different track events…won four-straight NCAA Championships in the 3-mile…holds school records in the 3-mile and 6-mile…won Pac-8 Championships in the 3-mile in 1971, 1972 and 1972 as well as the mile in 1971…never lost a race longer than a mile in an Oregon uniform…competed at the 1972 Olympics and finished fourth in the 5,000.

Galen Rupp (2005-09): Holds school records at 10,000 meters outdoors and at 5,000 meters indoors…ranks seventh in NCAA history in the 10,000, third in the indoor 5,000 and sixth in the indoor 3,000…won five national championships as a senior, sweeping the 3,000 and 5,000 indoors as well as the 5,000 and 10,000 outdoors…also part of the DMR winning team…2009 Bowerman Award Winner and USTFCCCA Athlete of the year both indoors and outdoors…2009 Pac-12 Track athlete of the year…11-time All-American…three-time Pac-10 Champion…set the American record in the indoor 5,000 in 2009 and again in 2011…set the American 10,000 record in 2011 and again in 2014…set the American 2-mile indoor record in 2014…member of the 2008 and 2012 Olympic teams, earning silver in the 10,000 in 2012…six-time U.S. Champion at 10,000 Meters...qualified for the 2016 Olympics in the marathon.

Mac Wilkins (1972-73): 1973 NCAA discus champion…three-time All-American, twice in the discus…swept the shot put and discus at the 1973 Pac-8 Championships…won the Olympic gold in the discus at the 1976 Olympics and silver at the 1984 Olympics…also qualified in 1980 but did not compete due to the U.S. Boycott…set the world record in the discus in 1976, breaking 70 meters for the first time…set American records in 1976 and 1980…won U.S. Championships in the discus in 1973, 76, 77, 78 and 79…also won an indoor U.S. title in the shot put in 1977…still ranks ninth in NCAA history in the discus.

Ashton Eaton (2007-10): Five time NCAA Champion, winning the decathlon three times and the heptathlon twice…five-time Pac-10 Champion, winning the decathlon three times to go with the 110 hurdles and long jump…2010 Bowerman Award Winner…school record holder in the decathlon and heptathlon…collegiate record holder in the heptathlon and ranks third in the decathlon…named Pac-10 field athlete of the year in 2009 and 2010…four-time USTFCCCA National Athlete of the year (twice outdoors, twice indoors)…eight-time All-American…most recently set the decathlon and heptathlon world records in 2012…2012 Olympic gold medalist…world champion in 2013 and 2015.
