Description
describe the structure and organization of a wide range of databases;
identify, describe, and evaluate databases;
formulate appropriate search strategies using controlled vocabulary, free- text searching, and Boolean commands;
analyze questions in preparation for query formulation prior to searching, including the reference interview;
analyze search results and modify search strategies on the basis of results.
Analysis
In this learning exercise, I explored various databases, experimented with different search strategies, and analyzed search results. One success was understanding how to use controlled vocabulary and Boolean commands, which helped refine my search process.
However, I struggled with formulating the correct search queries at first, leading to several failed attempts to locate relevant articles. Ultimately, I learned that adjusting search terms and strategies based on initial results is crucial to successfully retrieving information.
Reflection
Looking back, I recognize the importance of evaluating search strategies early in the process to save time and effort. I would approach future searches by first simplifying my queries before moving to more advanced strategies.
This experience also highlighted the need for patience and persistence when analyzing search results. In the future, I will seek to apply a more structured method, incorporating the lessons I’ve learned to improve my research outcomes.
