Some students will get a non-resident status after completing their RDS. This can be the result of many reasons. There are two options for changing your status from non-resident to resident. See below.
Do this if...
You made a mistake when you first completed RDS
Your information has changed since you first completed RDS
You failed to complete your RDS by the 25-day deadline for an initial consideration
*A reconsideration will give you the opportunity to fill out the same form again and correct information as needed.
Do this if...
Your information in RDS is correct, but RDS still marked you as a non-resident and you believe this to be incorrect
This happens when a student cannot provide a social security number or identification number for their parents or guardian
*An appeal will require you to provide additional information or documents to support your claim of NC residency.
Please do not worry if you are unable to provide an identification number for your parents/guardians. Most students that receive a non-resident status for this reason are successfully able to have that changed after requesting an appeal and providing that additional information! Reach out to Ms. Kelley if you have any issues or concerns about this process.
How To:
On the page where you see your residency status, there should be a blue button on the bottom right that says Reconsideration/Appeal. Click that.
Click the "I Agree" button on the next page. Then click "Click Here To Start Request".
Click through information about Reconsideration and Appeal and confirm your information on the next page. You can add a phone number or do that later,.
Choose the option that fits your situation. Either Reconsideration or SEAA Appeal.
For Reconsideration:
It will ask you to select the reason you are submitting a reconsideration and to explain that chosen reason. You don't have to go into too much detail.
Click "Submit": It will open the RDS form and you can start from the beginning making sure not to make any errors.
For Appeal:
It will ask you to answer a few questions and to provide details for why you believe your residency status is incorrect and ask for information about your current high school and other details.
In some cases, an appeal interview/meeting is required so it will ask you when and how you'd like to be contacted.
Once the appeal has been processed, it will tell you what additional information or documents are need to get your residency changed. This can be a HS transcript, utility bill, etc.
You can upload documents directly from your computer to RDS and submit. They will review those items and adjust accordingly.
