Keep out trash

By removing trash from open space–and reducing how much gets dumped there– less of it will get into our waterways. There are lots of opportunities to do this. Sometimes it is also helpful to conduct a trash audit in areas to determine how much of a problem trash is.

After participating in this activity, you should be able to...

  • Understand the sources and kinds of trash that are found in open space.

  • Be able to communicate the impacts of trash on the river corridor from a One Water perspective.

  • Direct other youth in efficient ways of collecting and disposing of trash in open space and recycling as appropriate

  • Describe the life cycle of plastics and recyclables as pollutants.

  • Understand impact of micro-plastics on the river and wildlife.

  • Meet and advise business and/or residential property owners adjacent to river banks about potential improvements to reduce trash impacts.

  • Design a pilot trash trap collection system.

  • Understand the potential trash impacts from people experiencing homelessness.
