I'm in Oklahoma City. The last time I was here was 1981. Back then, it took me 24.5 hours to drive 1,500 miles, straight from Stillwater, Oklahoma to San Diego, California. I-40 was not complete in Arizona and still called US Highway 66.
I spent 9 days to get here this time, driving 2,100 miles so far. While driving, I've been listening to audiobooks. I finished four books so far:
1. Hip to the Trip by Peter Dedek (about cultural aspects of Route 66)
2. Whose Names are Unknown by Sanora Babb (about the Dust Bowl era)
3. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (same as 3)
4. Travels with Charley in Search of America by John Steinbeck (travelogue)
These books made me think about values of life. Combined with the physical, sensorial experience of driving alone and seeing things, this road trip has been a deeply philosophical exploration. I'm loving it.
